Andrei Kostitsyn Call Out Coach?

Published by Doogs on August 11th, 2011 - in Montreal Canadiens, Recent News

It Soviet Russia, Bench rides you!

Andrei Kostitsyn of the Montreal Canadiens was quoted on a Belarusian sports website ‘Goals.by’ that “My relationship with the coach is not too good.”  Kostitsyn has struggled the last few years with inconsistent play, and has not really been the same player since his brother Sergei was traded from the Montreal Canadiens last year after coach Jacques Martin questioned his work ethic and shipped him down to the minors. He was traded later that year to Nashville for Dustin Boyd and Dan Ellis. Andrei managed to stick around with the club, but struggled to play at a top level, and was demoted to the 3rd and 4th line.

“It wasn’t me who started to play badly,” Kostitsyn explained to Goals.by. “It’s just that I was being put into (the) third and fourth line…I’ve tried talking to (Jacques Martin) more than once. But he doesn’t care.”

Well that’s a great sign. Things sure are peachy between the two it seems doesn’t it? Maybe this is something that should have been worked out BEFORE signing a one year deal back in June. When asked by Goals.by if it would be better to switch teams, the elder Kostitsyn replied, “I am not thinking about it for now. My agent’s advice is to play hockey.”

Stunning advice from his agent. Play hockey. That’s deep stuff there, really inspirational!

One thing is for sure, this saga is not over yet.

What do you think? Let us know, leave a comment below!

Will the Leafs trade Mike Komisarek?

'I'll ride the pine coach!'

Rumors of Mike Komisarek being on the market are warranted. He had a horrible year for leafs where he was only playing 8-10 minutes some nights last year. Then this off season, the Leafs added veteran John Micheal-Liles from Colorado, and youngster Cody Franson from the Predatros. Add those guys to the mix with Dion Phaneuf, Luke Schenn, Keith Allie, and Carl Gunnarson, one can see how Komi could feel a little left out.

The question now becomes, will some GM be willing to take on a 4.5 million dollar cap hit, and questionable defense in Mike Komisarek?

YES

With the NHL salary cap floor rising every year, certain NHL teams NEED to spend money. Just look at Brain Campbell going to Florida. A team like the New York Islanders would be a good fit.

Now the question is, what would you want in return for Komisarek from the Islanders?

A 4th round draft pick. Seriously I think Leaf fans would be happy with that. They would have 4 million dollars to spend on another center with a rancid concussion. That being said, I would expect Brian Burke NOT to trade draft picks, but instead try and find a solid NHL ready prospect or player in return. If Burke can work his magic, Leaf fans will dance with joy in the street. If Burke can’t find a dance partner, Leaf fans will do what they do every year. Bitch.

Could Chara Be Charged?

Remember this?

So do the Montreal Police. Turns out they have finished their investigation and have handed their evidents to crown prosecutors. They will  now determine if charges will be laid. Zdeno Chara, who was not even suspended for the hit, was interviewed by police earlier this summer.

I do believe that NO charges will or should be handed to Chara. I honestly dislike the idea of police getting involved in any NHL ruling, unless someone takes off their skate and stabs someone. The only reason police got involved is because the Montreal fan base shit their paints when Chara wasn’t suspended. Should he have been? Probably. Should the police get involved? Probably not.
If Chara does get charged and is found guilty, he could join Nik Khabibulin and Sean Avery as NHL players to spend time in the can this summer. Great job guys!

If Chara doesn’t get charged, word is he’ll spend the last few weeks of summer using the Stanley cup has an actual cup, drinking as much booze as legally possible. Lord knows I would.

Sean Avery goes to jail

Published by Doogs on August 5th, 2011 - in New York Rangers, Recent News

F&*# the Police

NHL tough guy and noted douche bag Sean Avery reportedly spent 7 hours in a California jail yesterday, after he was arrested out side his home for ‘battery of a police officer’. What a classy guy. If there was one NHL player that is straight up dumb enough to push a cop, my vote would have to be for Sean Avery.

Police showed up to Avery’s residents due to multiple noise complaints stemming from a house party inside Avery’s home. They were called once, and left. They showed up again, and that’s when things got ugly. Avery was arguing  with officers when his allegedly pushed one of them to get back inside his home. More cops were called, and eventually Avery came out peacefully and was arrested without incident. Sean spent around 7 hours in jail before posting a $20,000 dollar bail. The New York Ranger and NHL have yet to comment on the situation. Also no word if Avery was taken advantage of while in the can. Chances are Bubba enjoyed his sloppy seconds.

Avery has led a very interesting and controversial NHL career. He has spent the last 2 years with the New York Rangers but has been ineffective on the score sheet, scoring just 14 goals in his last 145 games. Avery bounced around other NHL teams including LA and Dallas, and spent time in the minors. Avery is arguably the most annoying player in the NHL, and when news broke of his arrest earlier today, I’m sure many smiled and laughed. Oh Avery, what would we do without you?

Canucks try out two: Nolan and Fedorduk

Published by Doogs on August 4th, 2011 - in Recent News, Vancouver Canucks

Check out my new skates brah

The Vancouver Canucks have inked NHL Veterans Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk to professional tryout contracts. Nolan has 1200 NHL games under his belt, but played last year in Switzerland. He was semi-productive with his last NHL team the Minnesota Wild. Although he only scored 16 goals and 33 points in the 2009-2010 season, the year before Nolan had a respectable 25 goals in only 59 games. The problem is that Nolan is now 39, and a year away from the speed of an NHL game. With a history of shoulder and back problems, one would have to consider Nolan making the team some what of a long shot. That being said, I really do feel the Canucks could use a veteran guy like Nolan in the dressing room, and on the ice. I know one thing for sure about Nolan. Earlier this spring, in the Stanley Cup final featuring the Canucks and Bruins, you may recall Brad Marchand at one point punching Sedin in the face 7 or 8 times in a row after the whistle. With Owen Nolan on the ice, that will not happen. And if it does, Nolan has no problem beating up a kid. That kid being Brad Marchand.

But how much does Nolan have left in the tank? Can he still do this?

One thing that never gets old… Fighting.

The Canucks are also trying out Todd Fedoruk. Fedoruk’s contract was bought out by Tampa bay earlier this year. Fedoruk is best known for getting is ass knocked out by now Leafs tough guy Colton Orr.

That is pretty much all Todd Fedoruk does. He certainly doesn’t score many goals, with a grand total of 32 in 545 games. Good job Todd! Fedoruks career highlight (other than this one above) is being traded from Philadelphia Flyers in 2005 to the Anahiem Ducks for a 2nd round draft pick. The Ducks realized they made a horrible trade and shipped Todd back to the Flyers in 2006 for a 4th rounder. Good job Todd!

Weber Wins! Sharp is in!

7.5 Million? I wanted 8!

Nashville Predators got their man, it just cost them 3 million dollars more than they wanted. Weber was awarding 7.5 million by an arbitrator earlier today. Weber was seeking 8.5 million, which may have been a little high, but Nashville completely low balled him with a 4.75 million offer. All said and done, i think it is a fair deal. Weber is without a doubt the Predators best player, and one of, if not the best defenseman in the entire NHL. Averaging over 25 minutes a game,  40+ points and one hell of a canon from the point, even the cash strapped Preds will gladly pay Shea for another year. But with no longer term deal, Pred fans may be asking their selves if this could be the last year.

No more leafs rumors! Woohoo!

Patrick Sharp also got stupidly richer today, signing a 5 year contract extension with Blackhawks of Chicago. The deal is worth 5.9 million a season for a total of 29.5 million. Not a bad chunk of change! This is a great signing for Chicago, as we all know Patrick Sharp is sick. And just so our older audience isn’t confused, sick is a term the kids use today to call someone ‘very good’. Last year Sharp had 34 goals with 37 assists for 71 points in 74 games played. Sharp along with Kane and Toews, keep this Hawks team scary good for years to come.

Kesler has Hip Surgery

Playoff Warrior

Vancouver Canucks star Ryan Kesler underwent succesful hip surgery today to repair a torn labrum. Many who watched the Vancouver Canucks during their playoffs run this past spring predicted such an injury from Kesler.  After only recording 1 point in the Stanley Cup final, it was very clear Ryan was not 100%. He had a break out year this year with 41 goals and 73 points while playing all 82 regular season games.  Kesler is expected to recover in about 10-12 weeks, and be ready in time for next season.

Nabokov back, to backstop with Islanders

Nabokov tries to save his career

It appears as if veteran goalie Evgeni Nabokov is going to join the New York Islanders after all. Nabokov was claimed on waivers earlier last year, after signing a deal with Detroit. However, Nabokov did not report to the island, and was therefore suspended by GM Garth Snow and company.

“Yes, I do plan on attending,” Nabokov said. “Now I will have full preparation for the season.”

Many people criticized Nabokov for not showing up to play for the Islanders, but he tried to clear the air today.

“Any time you go to a new group, you want to be welcomed,” Nabokov said. “I’m not sure everyone understands the situation. Players can play five, 10 minutes a night, but goalies have to play the whole game. I wasn’t ready and the situation wasn’t right. I wish we had better communication between the Islanders and me, but it was a tough decision for me that I couldn’t help.”
Nabokov also said is wasn’t in game shape last year, and would have needed 4-6 weeks to get back into the groove. Since New York were not going to make the playoffs, he didn’t want to get into game shape, only to play the last few games of a meaningless season. (Sorry Islanders fans!)

If you`re wondering why Nabokov had to clear waivers after the Wings signed him, the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement states that anyone who plays in a professional league before signing an NHL contract must clear waivers. Since Nabokov was playing for mother Russia in the KHL, this was the process he had to take.

So what is your opinion? Many thought it was a low ball move not reporting last year, but after hearing his side, maybe some will understand. Either way, the crease will be crowded this year with Ricky DiPietro and Nabokov playing for the #1 spot. If Geno puts up solid numbers, I would expect him to be a hot comoditty come trade deadline time.

Just what the Islanders need. More youth and draft picks.

Nabokov signed a huge deal last year to play in the KHL,but a few months into the season, he realized what many other NHLers who go to the KHL realize. Its shitty. (Sorry KHL fans) The best players belong in the best league.

Wellcome back Nabokov, enjoy the Island!

Brent Burns swims with sharks

Chaseing wellfed like a shark

San Jose have signed Brent Burns to a 5 year deal worth $28.8 million. The  6’5, 220 pound defenseman was acquired from Minnesota Wild earlier this off season in a deal that saw Deven Setoguchi and a first head back to the Wild. Burns is coming off a career year potting 17 goals and 29 assists for 46 points. Look for those numbers to improve, with a potential Burns-Boyle 1-2 combo. Oh boy.

Zach Parise signs and Brodeur getting senile

I'm rich!

The New Jersey Devils have inked winger Zach Parise to a 1 year, 6 million dollar deal. Many, including I, were expecting the Devils to sign Parise to a long term deal. Not so much. Both sides are rumored to be still working  towards something long term. However, if they do fail to get something done, expect a lot of drama similar to Brad Richards situation of  last year. Just what we need, more drama.

Praise played a whopping 13 games last year before going down with a right knee injury. That injury was key in Jerseys epic start that saw them win just 10 out of their first 40 games. Yes that is a real stat. They were 10-28-2 in late December. That is just brutal! What is even more brutal is that Praise shredding his right knee 13 games into season absolutely fucked over my fantasy team.  Why did I pick him 4th overall anyways? What an idiot. Stamkos would have been a much more fitting pick.

Overall,  this is indeed an interesting signing that leaves NJ fans with many questions. I have polled 100 random Devils fans, the top 5 questions are on the board.

Q1: Why didn’t Lou Lamoriello lock up Parise to a long term deal?

A1: Lou could be afraid to offer long term money to Zach if his knee is not 100%. Knees are wonky things. I say it’s smart to give him a year to prove he can play back at a top level without any ill effects.  That being said, I still would have signed him to a long term deal.

Q2: What if Parise didn’t want to sign long term?

A2: Good question. Certainly, there are many concerns in New Jersey after missing the playoffs for the first time since the mid 90s. Maybe he wants to take a year to see the direction of the team before committing long term.

Q3: How old is Martin Brodeur?

A3: Unknown, but rumored to approaching his mid 70s.

Q4: What will NJ look like without Brodeur in net?

A4: Shitty.

Q5: Seriously, what will NJ look like without Brodeur?

A5: It will be interesting to say the least. Although I do love the Brodeur/Hedberg combo (who doesn’t), age is a real factor. It’s time for the new kid on the block to come into town and take the number one job. One problem. There is no kid. Prospects Maxime Clermont and Scott Wedgewood are promising young net minders, but they do not appear to be future number 1 goalies. So the question remains. Will the Devils look for a goalie via trade, or free agency? Do they end up signing Parise to a long term deal, or spending that money on a new franchise Goalie?

What would you do?
